Behind the Stitch: What Goes Into a Nenye-Esthy Custom Gown

People often see the finished gown — the silhouette, the fabric shimmer, the way it falls perfectly in every photo. What they rarely see is everything that comes before it: the conversation, the measurements, the decision over a particular seam, the careful pressing of a hem at midnight. This is a small window into that world.

At Nenye-Esthy Fashion House, every custom piece begins long before scissors meet fabric. It begins with a woman who has something to celebrate, someone to impress, or a moment she wants to remember forever. And it ends with a garment that has her story stitched into every seam.

It Starts with a Conversation The first thing we do — always — is listen. Before any sketch is drawn or fabric is touched, we want to understand the occasion, the woman, and the feeling she is chasing. Is she walking down the aisle? Receiving an award? Meeting her partner’s family for the first time? Attending a funeral that deserves dignity and poise?

Every occasion carries its own emotional weight, and great fashion design acknowledges that. Our consultations — whether in person at our Kubwa studio or via WhatsApp — are relaxed, detailed, and entirely focused on you. We ask questions. We listen carefully. We take notes.

The Fabric Decision Choosing the right fabric is one of the most important — and most enjoyable — parts of the bespoke process. Fabric is not just material. It is texture, movement, drape, and feeling. A satin gown moves completely differently to an organza one. A heavy lace carries a different weight and presence than a light chiffon overlay.

We guide every client through this selection with care, sharing fabric swatches, explaining how each option will behave in photographs and movement, and always keeping budget in mind. We never push for the most expensive option — we push for the right option.

The Measurements This is where bespoke truly earns its name. A pattern drafted to your specific measurements — not to a generic size 12 or size 16 — is one that allows the garment to work with your body rather than against it.

We take comprehensive measurements: bust, waist, hip, shoulder width, sleeve length, back length, and more — depending on the style of the garment. For clients who are not able to visit us in Abuja, we provide a guided remote measurement process via WhatsApp to ensure accuracy from a distance.

The Making Once the consultation is complete, the fabric chosen, and the measurements taken — the making begins. This is where time, skill, and love are poured into every centimetre of the garment. Cutting, interfacing, sewing, fitting, adjusting, pressing, finishing. The process is not rushed, because a rushed garment shows.

Depending on the complexity of the design, a bespoke piece from Nenye-Esthy typically takes between 2 to 4 weeks. Bridal gowns and highly detailed ceremonial pieces may take longer. We always communicate timelines clearly — and we deliver on them.

The Moment of Delivery There is a particular feeling that happens when a woman puts on a garment made entirely for her for the first time. It is not just that it fits — it is that it fits in a way that nothing off the rack ever quite manages. She does not need to pull or tug or adjust. She stands there and it simply is her.

That moment is why we do this. Every single time.
